Andalib Khelgati was born in Lome, Togo and currently resides in Chicago with his wife and two young sons. His first art teacher was his maternal grandmother, whom he would accompany as a child to her ceramic classes when visiting the U.S. When his family moved to Kenya, he enrolled in private painting lessons with a local artist, and continued to paint through high school and college.
Andalib draws his inspiration from the water and the skies. Always seeking movement in his paintings, he often incorporates modeling clay into his works. His work falls in the field of Abstract Expressionism, a space where he finds freedom in the movement and interactions of colors and elements. He often paints in pairs or triplets – allowing him to work in a more improvisational way as an artist. His paintings evoke a sense of freedom, joy and resolution. While Andalib isn’t officially painting, he is out there leading schools and serving children and communities. Art is a meditative practice that informs his service to the world.
